• Any other incident involving the hire vehicle is the hirer’s responsibility however we will try to assist where possible. Our telephone number is a 24 hour number. Our vehicles carry the required tool kit and spare tyre.

• All self-drive hire vehicles are maintained by us and checked before collection by the hirer.

Vehicle condition on return?

• There will be a charge if the vehicle is returned excessively dirty, inside or outside.
• The hirer will be responsible for any damage incurred: this will include windscreen damage, cracked mirrors, cigarette burns to upholstery, flat or damaged tyres etc.

Fuel?

• Your vehicle will have a 1/4 tank of fuel when you collect it and must have a 1/4 tank of fuel when returned.
• Vehicles which are not correctly fuelled on return will be refilled by us and the cost deducted from the deposit before it is refunded.

Van Tips

A van is used to carry a load.

This sounds obvious but needs to be stated.

• When you collect it from us it won’t be loaded so will drive more like a car.
• When actually loaded it may feel much different.
It will:
• Handle less well on corners
• Take longer to stop
• Be slower accelerating away from lights and junctions
• Take longer when overtaking slower traffic.

Vans are bigger than cars!

• Remember if you are hiring a van that they need more room than a car to turn so give yourself plenty of time and space when taking corners.
• Be aware of the width, length and height of the vehicle, particularly if you're not used to driving one.
• You must use the door mirrors, on both sides, much more than is usual when driving a car.
• Take extra care when you're parking or reversing.
• It is a very good idea to have a second person act as a ‘spotter’ if you aren’t completely comfortable using only door mirrors to reverse with.
• The van height should be displayed just above the driver's side of the windscreen. If not find out what height it is.
• Watch for places that have vehicle height limits like car parks or low bridges.
• When you're driving under a bridge, look out for road markings that tell you clearly how close you can drive to the edge without causing a problem.
• Be careful not to ‘ kerb’ the rear wheels at left-turn junctions or tight bends in towns.
• Be very aware of cyclists who sometimes overtake on your inside.

Mind your back!

Here are some basic principles that everyone should observe prior to lifting an object with a significant weight. This type of work is referred to as a ‘manual handling operation’:

• Vans can provide an extra difficulty as the object must be lifted into the load-space, perhaps requiring a stretching or reaching movement, unless there is a powered tail-lift fitted.
• It is very important to avoid twisting the body while carrying a heavy object.
• You may avoid this risk by turning your feet, not twisting your body, to position the load.
• Ensure that the object is light enough to lift without over-stressing your back, that it is stable and is unlikely to shift or move
• Heavy or awkward loads should be moved using a handling aid, such as a trolley, or with the help of a second person
• Make sure the route is clear of obstructions
• Make sure there is somewhere to put the load down in the van load-space
• Stand as close to the load as possible, and spread your feet to shoulder- width
• Bend your knees and try and keep the back's natural, upright posture
• Grasp the load firmly as close to the body as you can
• Use your legs to lift the load in a smooth motion as this offers more leverage reducing the strain on your back
• Carry the load close to the body with the elbows tucked into the body

Loading

• It's better to have everything packed tightly, instead of using all of the available cargo space, to prevent things from shifting around during the trip.
• If you don't fill the whole van, secure the back of your load with loading straps or other materials to keep them from moving.
• You may have to take apart things like tables and desks in order to load everything tightly and to ensure safe transport.
• Sofas and other furniture may be placed on their ends to also achieve a tighter load. Be sure to load your goods so they don't damage each other. For example, an item with a protruding metal part may puncture a sofa or mattress.
• Be careful not to slide or drag furniture in the van as damage may be caused to the furniture.
• When you are loading the van you will probably be using the rear doors as your main point of entry and you may rely more heavily on the side access door, if fitted, for the unpacking. Make sure your cargo is secure in this area so that if you open a sliding door, it won't fall out.
• Loading a van requires a lot of common sense. Take a look at everything in the van before you secure it and see if there are open spaces or other potential spots where things can shift or be damaged.
• If your van has a powered tail-lift make sure you find out how to use it.

Is your load secure?

• Load your van from the front of the load-space and work backwards.
• Keep the heaviest items on the load-space floor. This helps keep the centre-of-gravity low to reduce swaying or tipping.
• Distribute weight as evenly as possible across the width of the floor.
• If necessary wedge or pack the load to reduce the likelihood of it shifting. Use cargo straps and/or light, rigid packing materials if necessary.
• Just a little movement of the van can cause an unsecured load to slide around dangerously.
• This in turn can cause the van to sway or tip unexpectedly and affect tyre grip or braking.

Are all the doors securely closed?

• Make sure you check that the rear or side doors are closed fully and securely and can't open when the van is moving.

Speed limits

• Most vans are under 7.5 tonnes laden (loaded) weight and must follow the speed limits for goods vehicles of the same weight. For example they must not exceed 50 mph. ( 80 km/h) on roads where cars may travel at speeds up to 60 mph.
